American Idol Judges and Presentation Skills by Jacki Rose

Last night American Idol judges said things to the singing contestants such as:

"We're looking for originality."
"Show me something I haven't seen before."
"Don't be like everyone else."
"Believe in yourself and show more confidence."
"Wow me!"

These are the same things I say to my clients who are interested in improving their presentation skills. If you want to impress your clients, get new clients, and give presentations that produce great results, then you need to listen to these judges.

Does Your Audience Make You Nervous?

During one of my presentation skills coaching programs, one of the attendees said to another attendee when he presented to us: "Do we make you nervous?" He then replied with a statement that I thought was so profound I just had to blog about it. He said: "I wouldn't put that on you. I bring it on myself."

Your audience does not make you nervous. You make yourself nervous. It's up to you to be nervous or not. Remember that just because you may be nervous doesn't mean you have to show it. Act as if you have total confidence when you speak in public.

Public Speaking Is Like Driving a Car

Do you remember the first day you drove a car? Were you nervous? But after you started driving for a little while, you got used to it. Now you probably are a very confident driver. Public speaking is very similar. When you first start to speak in front of groups of people, you may be very nervous. But the more you learn how to speak in public and the more you do it, the much more comfortable you become and then, just like driving, you become a very confident speaker.
