She is talking, talking, talking, talking. She's not even taking a breath or stopping to pause. She is just giving this poor person on the other end of the phone tons of information. No matter how great the information is, she is unaware that people have very short attention spans, and the person on the other end is just not getting it all. When she finally stopped talking to see if the other person was still on the phone, I heard her respond to the client with, "I understand how you can find this overwhelming, but trust me it really isnt'." I tend to doubt it. It may have changed. I saw a speaker, keynote, in the middle of his speech and when he saw the time card go up we all heard him say: “Really? However, when he presented he did all of the following that took away from his confident presence:

Paced around all over the stage
Had his hands in his pockets
There were technical difficulties (he did not know how to get to his second slide)
Opened with “can you hear me?”
Stepped way back on the stage when asked us a question, rather than coming closer to us.
Wore his name tag, and it was turned over, twisted, and very distracting

However, here’s what he did have which made his audience like him and keep the audience engaged:
He had enthusiasm for his topic.
He had passion for his message and let that passion show.
He had a fun personality and let that fun personality shine.
He was sincere in answering our questions and you could tell he really cared about us getting the information.

www.JackiRose.com
www.publicspeakingskillscoach.com

Fear of Public Speaking

Fear comes from the unknown. Time and time again I see business professionals give presentations without knowing how to give a presentation. Most presenters have not had public speaking skills training, but we tend to copy what they are doing. That is why there are so many boring PowerPoint presentations being delivered out there today. To become a great presenter who produces great results, you need two things: 1 - to know what to do 2 - to do it. Learn how to present effectively then practice those skills and techniques over and over and you will become a much better presenter than you are today.

http://www.jackirose.com

Three Ways to Keep Your Audience Engaged

This may be a very short answer (blog posting) but less is more and these three tips can be extremely effective in keeping your audience engaged in your presentation.

1 - Change it up every 8-10 minutes (i.e. tell a story, ask a question, do something different than straight lecture)
2 - Add pauses (let your info sink in, add emphasis, etc.)
3 - Get your audience involved even if it’s saying “by a show of hands, who has…”

Conference Presenting – walk out again

Other reasons people may be walking out of your session: they got a phone call or text message that they need to take; they are feeling sick or need to use the restroom; you remind them of their ex lover and just can’t look at you. Your audience wants to know that you have experience in the subject you are discussing. Even if it's not your expertise, don't tell your audience that. Why? Because no matter what you say, they may not believe it. They may think since you are not the expert, you may not know what you are talking about. Most likely, that is not the case and you do know what you are talking about. Make sure your audience has confidence in you. Do not tell them it's not your expertise. Tell them how much you do know by telling them and showing them through your own experience with the subject.

Good presentation skills tip: Instead of saying "This is not my expertise." I recently bumped into one of the attendees who took that 22 week program and told me that he got more out of my program than any of the others. He then told me why. He said, "you were honest. You told us where you came from and that's where I am now. I could really relate to you and was very inspired. You gave me hope, enthusiasm and motivation to grow as a speaker."

When you present, just be yourself. Tell your audience where you came from. Be humble. You will be much more effective. Remember, it's not about you, it's all about the people in your audience. Afterall, isn't that why you are making youre presentation? Isn't it for them? Even if you are trying to sel them something. What is it? Karaoke!

I was recently at a karaoke bar where one girl got up, sang, and then during the musical break (the part in the song where there are no lyrics and you just stand there with nothing to do)made use of that time and asked the audience: "Who needs life insurance? Pick up a brochure here." That's when I realized how beneficial karaoke can be.

Later on, a man was up on stage, and before he started singing the karaoke DJ said, give Dave some support, he just told me he's really nervous." Good for Dave for going up even though he was nervous. Now it's your turn. The first time you write out your presentation is when your presentation will be the longest, the heaviest. Then the process starts where you need to start making it shorter, thinner. You go through it once and see where you can cut back. Then you go back again and see what else you can take out or say in less words. You are making your presentation thinner and thinner. The ones who do prepare, do not prepare as well as they could. Here are three quick steps to prepare for great results:

1 - Decide what the desired outcome of your presentation is.
2 - Write down everything your audience needs to know in order to produce that outcome.
3 - Think of stories, examples, and analogies that you can use to hone your message.

Once you do these three steps, write out your entire presentation word for word. Your audience will be more attentive to what you are saying (your message) rather than what you are saying over and over.

Comment on this blog at the blog for conference presenters.

Using your Notes when Presenting

When you look at your notes, do not say “I’m going to look at my notes so I do not forget anything.” I admit that I even do this from time to time, but there is no reason for it. Especially when they are telling a personal story or real life example to hone their message. They seem to think that the audience members are mind readers. Because you are so close to your subject matter and know what you are going to say, you forget that your audience is hearing it for the first time and needs a little bit more information. They will get tired as the day goes on. This means you need to use more engaging techniques as you go. For example, you definitely need to open with high energy and you can give lots of great substance in the morning. As you get closer to lunch, you need to be a little more interactive than the morning. After lunch is the biggest challenge and then closer to the end of the day is the worst. In the afternoon, plan some humorous stories, interactive activities, and ask lots of questions. Some simple things you can do are: ask “show of hand” questions. i.e. “By a show of hands, who likes this idea?”
Have a workbook, where they have to fill in the blanks. This gives your audience an urgent need to pay attention to you. Give people a short writing assignment and have them share their answers to the person next to them or if time, break them up into groups for a group activity.

The worst thing you can do in the afternoon is to just have them sit and listen to you. Get them moving, involved with your presentation, and having fun. They will learn and absorb so much more and will find your program worth while for attending.

Free PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS tips: www.publicspeakingskillscoach.com

Get Your Audience Back

Get the attention of your audience back after break, by telling a story. Slow down, pause, and punctuate!

Free PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS tips: www.publicspeakingskillscoach.com

Speak Through Your Fear

When I entered the world of professional speaking I had no interest in speaking internationally. It sounded to complicated, too scary, and I just didn’t think it was for me. In fact, whenever I read my speaker’s magazine and listened to the audio CD of all the tools of growing your speaking business, I always skipped over the part about speaking Internationally. It did not apply to me. I was never going to be an International Speaker – never, ever. But, one day I received an email from a seminar company in Asia. They invited to conduct a training program in Singapore and Malaysia. I was suddenly interested. Maybe because they were interested in me. For the first time, I could see myself speaking Internationally. Was it because I had an opportunity to do it and I didn’t have to go looking for it. Was it because someone had faith in me. Or was it because, I’m the type of person who likes to experience new things. Possibly, all three. My point here is, when you have an opportunity to give a presentation to an audience or on a topic that you could never imagine yourself doing, why not take a chance and go for it.

My trip to Asia was amazing! I had a great time from beginning to end and it was an experience I will cherish forever. I may even go back! I no longer have a fear of speaking Internationally. If you have a fear of public speaking, then speak. Speak, speak, speak and then speak some more. The more you do anything the less fearful you will be. Be open and receive what comes your way. It just may be coming your way for a very good reason.

Free PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS tips: www.publicspeakingskillscoach.com

You Need to Get a Life

When I returned from my bike trip I joined Toastmasters (public speaking skills). I went to my first conference and saw that a small number of people were receiving a very prestigious award called the DTM – Distinguished Toastmaster Award. As the awards were given out, it was explained to the rest of us what it takes to achieve a DTM. They kept listing accomplishments after accomplishments of speeches, officer roles, and public speaking projects that you need to achieve. It sounded to me that to accomplish this you will not have any time for anything else. I leaned over to my friend and whispered, “These people need to get a life.” About 5 years later, I achieved my DTM. And yes, I do have a life. I just couldn’t imagine being able to do all of those things, but as I got more into Toastmasters I found myself taking on challenges one at a time. Before I knew it, I was achieving my DTM. It wasn’t even anything I was striving for. If you take one challenge at a time it will lead you to great accomplishments with your presentations. Take one speech at a time, do it the very best you can, and the next one will be even better. The key is to take on every speaking opportunity you can, but do it one speech at a time and before you know it, you will accomplish something you never imagined.

Free PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS tips: www.publicspeakingskillscoach.com

You Won’t Believe This

I had the privilege to sit in an all day seminar put on by Brian Tracy, America’s leading authorities on the development of human potential and personal effectiveness. He has spoken to over 400,000 people all over the world (53 countries). He is the author of many best-selling audio programs and has produced over 300 in over 25 years. My point is, he’s pretty amazing. And guess what, he does not use? PowerPoint! I was very surprised to see what he does use. You won’t believe this and if you are young enough you won’t even know what I’m talking about, but he uses …. Are you ready.. he uses… an... overhead projector!!! That’s right, in front of hundreds and thousands of people. It gets better, not only does he use it, but he writes on it as he goes rather than using professional printed overheads. And… his writing is almost as bad as mine. Why do I tell you this? In 1997 I was on a bike trip from California to New Hampshire. That’s 3700 miles across the United States. I remember the first day when I was checking in, the tour director asked me if I had clipless pedals? I said, “yeah right, like I’m going to have clipless pedals. I will never have clipless pedals.” Two weeks into the trip, I had clipless pedals and have been riding with clipless pedals ever since. Clipless pedals are the kind of pedals on a bicycle that your shoes snap into so you are attached to the pedals. It always scared me too much and I could not see myself with them. Never say: never. Many of my clients say that they could not see themselves presenting in a more dynamic and engaging way, but as soon as they started speaking and learning what makes a great presenter, they surprised themselves and became even better than they ever thought possible. Never say: never. Instead say: Probably some day.

Free public speaking skills tips: www.jackirose.com

PAUSE before your speak

If you have ever seen me present on public speaking and presentation skills or if you have read any of my articles on public speaking, you have heard me say “PAUSE before your speak.” Pause is an acronym for 5 things to do before you ever open your mouth to start your speech:
P – position yourself center stage
A – Appear Confident by standing tall
U- unwind, relax, and breath
S – Smile at your audience
E – Make eye contact with your audience

PAUSE before you speak and you will connect with your audience more effectively.

Free public speaking skills tips: http://www.jackirose.com/

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/presentwithpep

Aconyms for Public Speaking and Presenting

GSTV (Gas Station TV) – Make up an acronym to add spice to your presentations. They get just as nervous as my clients with full blown presentations. Mainly because they are not sure what to do. Here's what I tell them:

1 - Have a great opening to get the audience interested in what they are about to hear and who they are about to here from. This is the same you would do in a full-blown presentation. A strong opening is extremely important.

2 - Get typed up introductions from your panel presenters. Ask them to send you an introduction on how they would like to be introduced. Tell them what to include. You could also interview them for the introduction. Be sure to add a personal note about each one - for example, what they like to do in their free time. This helps to connect with the audience.

3 - Just like a full-blown presentation, you need to have a dynamic closing. Sum up the key points that the panelists mentioned and emphasize the benefits to the audience of the entire presentation. Send them away feeling motivated, inspired, and ready to take action.

Free Public Speaking Skills Tips

Emotional Public Speaking

There was a question on one of the professional speaking groups on linkedin on emotional speaking. The person wanted to know if it was okay to get emotional when she spoke.

Here was my response:

Emotion is the way to impact your audience. Most people today do not show enough emotion which leaves the audience not knowing how to interpret or feel about the presentation. Your audience will only feel what feelings and emotion you portray. If you want them to have an emotional reaction, then show that emotion.

Now... with that said. You don't want to make your audience too uncomfortable by losing it. You need to be ready to give a speech that is very emotional for you. Shortly after my father passed away I gave a speech about him. I am a professional speaker and thought I could control the tears, but I could not. Afterwards people told me I was not ready to give that speech. I had never seen a TV at the gas pump before and I was shocked that I just found myself enthralled in the program without realizing the fact there was something I had not seen before. In the middle I said to myself, “Wait a sec, I’m watching TV.... at a gas station!”

Are you so used to watching TV that it has become an automatic habit. When you speak in public you have automatic habits that you are not aware of. There was plenty to do for adults and kids - separately! One day the kids camp put on a talent show for the adults. As I observed these kids I realized something very important about public speaking skills for adults. Some of the kids were scared to get up in front of everyone and do their act and avoided it. Some got up, but said um a lot and paced around. And there were a few that were just so excited to be performing they didn't get nervous or scared, they just had a whole lot of fun!

So here's what I learned.
1 - It is normal to fear public speaking, it's normal to say ahs and ums, and it is normal to have nervous fidgeting. However, this doesn't mean it should not be corrected or improved. The less fearful, the less ahs and ums, and the less nervous fidgeting, the more successful your speech will be.

2 - I learned that the kids who were not nervous but excited to perform and having a great time up there were the ones who knew that the audience supported them and they wanted to be entertained. These little performers connected with the audience to have a good time together.

When you know your audience is going to benefit from whatever you have to say, know that they are on your side, and you decide to present with them rather than at them, you will do just fine. Maybe even great!

Free public speaking skills tips: http://www.jackirose.com/

100 Public Speaking Tips

If you like these tips, you can get 100 of them in Jacki's "100 Public Speaking Tips" book of her previous blog postings!

Your Interesting Stories & Geneology

The world’s longest serving Monarch is the King of Thailand who has been the king for almost 60 years. The King took several candid camera shots of the Einstein living room and said, he wished he brought flash bulbs.

Ira and Rose Einstein were my great grandparents. I was named after my grandma Rosie. My brother was named after grandpa Ira.

The daughters and great granddaughter the article refers to were my Nana, mother’s mother, and my cousin.

Ira Einstein was the half brother to Parkyakarkus who was a very famous comedian back in the day with Eddie Cantor. Parkyakarkus is Albert Brooks father. Albert’s real name is Albert Einstein. Yes – Albert Brooks is my cousin, but I have never met him and he does not know I exist.

I tell you this story because we all have interesting genealogy. I just recently learned about this part of mine. We don’t take the time to explore, to pay attention. Start with the genealogy you know, and write it down. Start a story journal and keep track of all the interesting things about your family, your families family, and experiences you have encountered.

Incorporate your interesting stories into your speeches and your presentations. Stop looking in the outside for your stories, and look within your own life. You may not find celebrity status, you may not find royalty, but you will find amazing stories that can be amazing gifts to your audience, not to mention yourself and the people who come after you in your family that you can share their heritage with.

http://www.jackirose.com/
http://www.publicspeakingcanbefun.com/

Celebrities In Common

What did Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, and Johnny Carson all have in common besides all being successful and famous. How you present determines the results of your presentations. A song on the radio would come on that I liked and I would start singing along with the music. I knew every word to the song and my parents would say: "Now why can't you memorize your school work like you memorize these songs?"

I never knew the answer until I became a Presentation Skills Expert. I now know why. I actually have two answers.

1 - I never memorized the songs. I just knew them because I would sing them over and over until I knew them.

2 - Songs are stories with a beginning, middle, and end. It's much easier to remember stories than school work!

These two items also apply to public speaking. Don't try to memorize your presentation, instead read it out loud over and over until you just know it. And, add lots of stories, examples, and analogies to your presentations. It will be much easier for you to remember what you want to communicate to your audience.

More free public speaking skills tips: http://www.jackirose.com/
http://www.publicspeakingcanbefun.com/

Positive Presentations in a Negative Economy

Life is not all that great right now in the corporate world. Layoffs every day, suicides, and people unable to afford food for their children. With all this happening, now more than ever you need to keep your customers and clients. Life goes on, business goes on, and the presentations you are giving needs to go on.

Are you focused on the negative or the positive? Now more than ever you need to bring out the positives. Your clients are concerned about being taken care of with less people. In your presentations you need to assure them they are going to get great service and great outcomes. Explain to them, be honest with them about what's happening with your business, but keep it positive.

No matter how negative a situation is, we have the choice to explain it in a negative way or a positive way. Negative actions produce negative results, positive presentations produce positive results.

http://www.jackirose.com/
http://www.publicspeakingcanbefun.cm/

Free public speaking skills tips
Public Speaking Books, workbook, and CD to help you develop your public speaking skills.

Speaking Too Fast

I was on one of my weekend bike rides when I realized faster is not better. I was with a group of other cyclists. We all usually take turns leading. All of a sudden I felt the group going faster and faster. It was then that I realized the guy who was now leading was the fastest cyclist in the group and he decided to go at his own pace, which was much faster than mine and everyone elses. As a result, within seconds he was far ahead and the rest of the group was left behind. We were unable to keep up with him.

When you talk too fast during a presentation, your audience will not be able to keep up with you. Many of my clients who speak fast think they are speaking slow, but they are not. If you think you speak slow, but people tell you that you speak fast, you better listen to them if you want your audiences to stay with you. Otherwise, they may still be at the point you made miles ago.

Public Speaking Skills - Jacki Rose
Free tips at: http://www.jackirose.com/
New Public Speaking Books Available Now

3 Steps to go From Fear To Fabulous

Recently I published a workbook titled "Fear to Fabulous Presentation Workbook Guide" 16 Steps to creating and preparing for a great presentation. Involve your audience - ask them questions, get them to share their stories, pain, and successes.

More free public speaking skills tips: www.jackirose.com

They Just Need to Like You

PBS has a wonderful show reviewing all of the old variety shows. From Milton Berle, to Carol Burnett: before, after, and in between. The one thing that was mentioned that I would like you to remember when you are presenting is that the narrator said, "It didn't matter if the material was mediocre, if they liked you they would stay and watch."

This just proves my point of how important it is to bring your true personality to your presentation. Show your audience who you are, your talents, your skills, and you charisma. Do that, and they will continue not only to watch you, but to listen and buy-in to you and your material.

More free public speaking skills

Kevin Bacon Performs

The Bacon Brothers are fabulous!

I saw them last night perform at Showcase Live at Patriot Place in Foxboro Massachusetts. I just love their music!

Kevin Bacon said something that made me want to blog about it: "My brother and I have a motto: when something goes wrong, write a song."

They say your funniest stories come from your worst experiences. But, there's something else that comes from these personal stories, and that is lessons learned. When you share your personal adversities with your audience, you share your lessons learned and when you do that, you teach and inspire your audience to take action in their own lives.

There's one more thing that telling your personal story does, and that is engages your audience.

So take Kevin's advice, when something goes wrong, instead of writing a song, write a story and include it in your next presentation.

More public speaking skills tips: http://www.jackirose.com/
